bad news, the chipmunk was put to sleep this morning. sorry everyone.

Thursday, June 28, 2007

I rescued a chipmunk with a concussion. He is so cute.

I had an exam today, so I was heading to class early at like 4:45. So, I walk outside, and I practically step on this chipmunk eating some baked lays on the sidewalk. Like, totally not even noticing I'm there. I almost tried to pet him, then I got scared he'd try and bite. I thought it might rain, so I went back for my rain jacket, came trotting back out, and almost stepped on him again. I just thought he really liked those chips.

So I get back from class, and Clubb meets me to go running. We walk out, and there is this chipmunk running circles with his head cocked to one side. Like, this poor little guy couldnt walk right at all, we knew something was wrong. Then he was spinning out into the driveway, and almost got hit by a car. We watched him go back towards the bushes, and went running. But the more we talked about him, we knew something was wrong, so I said if he was still there, I'd get him in a shoebox and get him a place to live.

Sure enough, we get back from running, and there he is, spinning away. I got a showbox and herded him in and headed to petco. But it was closed so I went to meijer and got an $8 aquarium which I plan to return once I get a bigger one from mom (science teacher). Hopefully I can clean it so it looks like I didnt use it. I put down a lot of newspapers under the pine needles. He is now living on my desk in an aquarium. I put down newspapers, got him a little wood hideout, and a water dish. I laid down some rocks, sticks, pinecones and pine needles. I gave him some walnuts and a nutter butter bite (basically 2 tiny crackers with peanut butter between them- he LOVED it!)  He looks right at home!

food he really likes: baked lays, nutter butter bites

I got him a little water dish too, but i read online that they chew on plastic ones, so you need glass. this guy isnt too active, so im not worried yet. But, I think its too hard for him to get to it. I got some water in a spoon and put it in front of him, and he downed like 4 spoons of water! so, I think im going to get some caps and fill them up and disperse them around the tank, jsut so he doesnt have to go far for some water. I'm kind of scared he'll drown in the big one.

I found out what was wrong with him when i was searching about chipmunks/injured chipmunks/chipmunk diet, etc. it says if you find one running in circles with its neck held funny it probably has a concussion. so, i dont know if he'll actually heal or what, but i saved him!!

He got done eating and poking around, tucked his crooked head in, and went to sleep.
